Moving Back to Canada

Resources for Expatriate Canadians returning to Canada after living in the U.S. or further abroad

Should we move back to Canada in 2023?

Considerations during uncertain and challenging times

This article is intended to be of support to the thousands of expatriate Canadians in the U.S. and around the world who intend to move back to Canada in 2023 and for those who are already in the process of getting ready for their return.

The events of the last 3 years have been unprecedented in their scale, scope, and what they point to for the future. We are in "new territory" as a country and as a world. Economically, politically, and socially.

What we know for sure is that there are major impacts to the economy of Canada, the U.S., and most other countries unfolding that are now coming to the awareness of many people in the world. Stock market woes, a major real estate downturn and price correction, and interest rate changes are happening in Canada with complicated interconnected impacts.

There are also political impacts emerging that are wide in scope and large in scale in the U.S. and Canada. Sometimes eye-opening and alarming.

Finally, social changes are happening. For example, the trend of many people moving out of big cities in Canada continues while other people are migrating to these same big cities. A big shift both ways that is changing cities, semi-rural, and rural areas of the country. And thousands of Canadian every month leave Canada permanently for the U.S., Mexico, and many other countries.

Life is complicated in Canada right now.

Here are some questions, considerations, and stories shared by other Canadians in 2020 and 2021 that may help with your decision as to whether to move back in 2023:
